Finishes

Durakryl 102

Our standard finish is Durakryl 102  Durakryl 102 (an ultra violet cured coating) is a proprietary formulation which when cured leaves an inert film. Durakryl 102 has excellent toughness & mar resistance, excellent resistance to household chemicals, excellent moisture resistance and meets the test requirements of the Kitchen Cabinet Mfg. Assoc. (KCMA). The constituents of the cured film have been tested by an independent university laboratory and found to be non-toxic.

Since film is approximately 95% cured in the manufacturing process with 100% cure within two weeks of manufacture, only inert film is present on installed tops used as manufactured.

Since butcher block is such a versatile product our tops are used for many applications. We have had our Durakryl 102 tested to see how it reacts to many household and industrial products. The following is a listing of products tested and the results of the testing. The results are listed as passed (no effect) and failed (moderate to severe effect). A moderate effect would be a softening or discoloration of the finish.

Mineral OIl

Mineral oil is our other finish. It is not standard and does need to be specified. Pictured to the left you can see what a maple top looks like. It has a tendency to make the top look wet richening the colors.

Oiled tops need maintenance. The oil needs to be re-applied from time to time as the top dries out. This is the most traditional finish for a cutting surface. There is no set time frame for re-oiling tops. The rule of thumb is when the block begins to look pale and chalky oil should be reapplied. The other suggestion is that it would be difficult to over oil a top so when in doubt re-oil.

Good Stuff

Good Stuff is for the rejuvenation of Durakryl 102 tops.

It is a urethane gel which is intended to be used in refinishing a butcher block. If and modification occurs on a top with Durakryl 102 this is the recommended finish to reseal the tops.

It is also often used when tops are beginning the wear and you want to refinish. Just sand the tops down...follow the directions on the can of Good Stuff and your Butcher Block countertop will be good as new.
